Mike Carragher became an EFCG Senior Advisor following his retirement as CEO and President of VHB, where he led the firm from Jan 2015 – June 2026 and now serves as Chair of the Board. In his 11.5 years as VHB CEO, Mike has established himself as a visionary leader with a passion for advancing not only VHB, but the entire AEC industry as together we face unprecedented opportunities and challenges, from diversifying our workforce to advancing more sustainable, equitable communities.


VHB’s first non-founder president, Mike has steered the company through a transformational period of strategic growth, geographic expansion, and technological advancement. Known for his personable style and enthusiastic pursuit of excellence, Mike inspires VHB’s diverse team of 2300 engineers, scientists, planners, designers and technologists to continually raise the bar by embracing new technologies and finding innovative solutions to our clients’ complex challenges. He reminds us that at the heart of our work, we are making our communities and our world a better place, one project at a time. The outcomes of VHB’s efforts over the past 11 years include a nearly quadrupling of firm revenues (2014: $137M & 890 employees; 2025: $520M & 2300 employees) and continuous increases in profitability (25% increase in profitability margin).


Mike is recognized nationally as an industry leader. In addition to his helping to start-up and shape the ACEC Research Institute in 2020 and in 2025 was awarded the 2025 ACEC Distinguished Service Award for his leadership in advancing the collective knowledge of AEC industry and his vocal advocacy for the ability of engineers to make positive impacts on our world.


Mike’s work with the ACEC Research Institute has led to his active role and engagement with the International Federation of Engineering Consultants (FIDIC) Global Leadership Forum. Over the past few years Mike has been a key Forum speaker on ESG, AI and future business models He was recently appointed to the FIDIC Global Leadership Forum Advisory Board.


In 2021 Mike was recognized by the Environmental Financial Consulting Group (EFCG) as AEC industry CEO of the Year. In 2025 Mike was awarded an honorary doctorate by Wentworth Institute of Technology for his engineering leadership activity. He previously served as Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Delaware, his alma mater. In 2022 Mike was inducted into the University of Delaware Hall of Fame.


Mike and his wife Joan live in Boston and love spending time with their 3 children and 3 grandchildren.
