Vero Beach Landfill Gas-to-RNG Facility

Purpose

This Florida decarbonization project, developed in partnership with Nopetro Eco District, LLC (Nopetro), reduces carbon emissions by converting landfill gas from the Indian River County Landfill into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas (RNG). The facility produces approximately 1,000 SCFM of clean energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 30,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually—the equivalent to removing 4,300 passenger vehicles from the road each year.

Mead & Hunt served as the project’s engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) partner to meet critical deadlines and maximize Nopetro’s tax incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). To meet aggressive timelines, the team fast-tracked the project, starting in the summer of 2024 and completing it in the summer of 2025. To secure the bonus credit, our team prioritized United States-sourced steel, and our in-house Fabrication unit provided pipe supports. The team’s strategic approach accelerated the project’s path to market while maintaining compliance with the IRA’s requirements, demonstrating how thoughtful engineering can unlock environmental and economic value.

Impact

The facility serves as a model for how landfill gas can be converted from a waste product into a powerful greenhouse gas reduction solution, creating over 40 jobs and delivering meaningful local economic benefits while advancing the clean energy transition
