EFCG Sustainability Initiative
The EFCG Sustainability Initiative was established in 2005 to gauge environmental and socially-responsible activities among architecture, engineering, and consulting (“a/e/c”) firms, and to foster discussion and collaboration among industry leaders to advance such practices within firms internally, and as an industry, in the following four ways:

Harvard/Zofnass Sustainability Initiative in Infrastructure Design: Paul Zofnass, President of EFCG, has funded a program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (“GSD”) to develop a set of sustainability standards for the design of infrastructure (or “Zofnass Standards”), similar to the LEED standard for the design of buildings. Through a series of interactive sessions, the Initiative is combining the resources and expertise of Harvard University faculty with the experience and knowledge of experts from firms in the a/e/c industry, including AECOM, Atkins, CDM, CH2M Hill, HDR, HNTB, HOK, Jacobs, Kleinfelder, Weston Solutions, and Acciona Agua.

Design and Infrastructure Sustainability Conference at Harvard – April 21-23: The Zofnass Sustainability Infrastructure Program at Harvard, funded by Paul Zofnass, is a combined effort between the Sustainability Directors of twenty leading global engineering/consulting firms, and Harvard University’s leading experts in sustainability, drawn from the many schools at Harvard, and is coordinated through the Graduate School of Design. The purpose of the program is to analyze the concept of sustainability as it applies to major civil infrastructure projects on a global basis, and to develop a set of metrics and protocols by which to assess and evaluate the sustainability of such projects, much as the LEEDs program has done for buildings. After an intense year of research and workshops, the Program will host its first conference in Cambridge, MA on April 21-23.
